PDX Pretzel Throw Down: Edelweiss Deli

On a sunny, close to 80 degree day in Portland, the future husb and I went on a 10 mile urban hike, crossing over the Hawthorne bridge to check out the lower Southeast. I had heard of Edelweiss Sausage and Delicatessen, but unsure of their pretzel offerings. Sure enough, they had bigger-than-yo-head pretzels on display at the counter. It was the afternoon by that time and I snatched up one of the last pretzels ($3.00) along with a jar of horseradish and caraway havarti.

This pretzel was thick and huge. I ripped off a portion and felt like I was eating a big chunk of bread. The crust was thin but proved to have a traditional lye backbone. The salt was nice, but could have been more aggressively sprinkled on. Overall, it's best not to make pretzels this big because the lye crust to inner dough ratio becomes distorted and one mistakes pretzel for bakery bread loaf. This pretzel would rock my world if it were half as small.

If this pretzel wins in anything it is size.
