How I lost 10 lbs in Mexico: Street Food Explorations

A pictorial display of my street food encounters in Guadalajara and Mexico City, MX: The agony and ecstasy of a Gringo's Mexican street food noshings.

Blue corn in Xochilmilco

Tlyauda: blue corn tostada smeared with refried beans, topped with cactus, cotija cheese and salsa. Mexico City.

Churro filled with zarzamora y queso (blackberries and cheese): Coyoacan.

Churro filled with Nutella. Coyoacan.

Churro filled with Rompope (alcoholic eggnog). Coyoacan.

Grillin' Tlacoyos

Tlacoyo: blue corn masa stuffed with green bean paste, topped with cactus salad and cotija. Coyoacan.

Grillin' Corn. Coyoacan.
Corn with crema, cotija, lime and chili. Coyoacan.

Al Pastor with pineapple. Guadalajara

Al Pastor come to life. 2 for 5 pesos ~ 50 cents. Guadalajara.

Free formed Churros. Tlaquepaque.

Fresh garbanzos with chili and lime. Tlaquepaque.

My six foot framed broke into the 130s. I caught a bad bug in Mexico. It was worth it.

ummmm, maybe I should go to Mexico and shed some pounds too :) looking at all of this food wonder if that will work for me? or, just the opposite.

I lost about 15 pounds in Mexico once. Take my word for it that you don't want to know any of the details.

You LOST weight eating all of this?!

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I read the part about the bug.

But still!

That food looks frickin' delicious...I must go to Mexico...SI!
Sorry about the bad bug...better than bed bugs!

Now I have the perfect excuse to go to Mexico. My diet! This could put diet programs out of business :-). I'm sorry you had such bad luck with street food. Your photos, however, are wonderful. I hope you have a great day. Blessings...Mary

Very cool pics. Too bad about the bug. <130 on a 6' frame is really too little. Did you take an organized food tour? I'm thinking that's really the way to go. Oaxacan moles would be my first destination.

I wish I could pronounce all those Mexican words like Xochilmilco and Tlacoyo. It's all Greek to me LOL! The food looks great! I love the look of those churros. But seriously, stomach bugs suck. Good thing you still managed to eat well for a while before you got sick.

JW - I know, well have to compensate with PDX streetnedd now :-)

Christie Bishop - Filled churros were my lovers!

Elra - If you're not used to the water, it definitely will...

JustinM - I think we were on the same boat ;-)

Sharon - It wasn't easy, but my cheese and salty bloat baby is now gone.

Peter - But stop over in PDX before you do ;-)

Mary - Thanks so much. It's a painful 3-4 day weight loss program including hellish fever, body aches...and some other symptoms...

SouthBayGuy - I was free-stylin with the street food. Now chowing the vegan pastries and making a comeback to normal weight.

miamaria - Thanks so much for stopping by!

Rachel - I'm hankering for some fresh corn, but don't know when we're gonna get in in PDX.

Helen - They are more difficult to pronounce than Greek words! The Xochimilco is pronounced Soo-chee-milko. Go figure! Thanks for the well wishes, I am much better now.

So the bad bug did it - same thing always happens to my mom.
O, but the food all looks SO good. The filled churros - I never realized they could be filled! And the blue corn...beautiful.

Traveling to an exotic place, eating wonderful stuff and losing weight? Are you kidding? I am off to Mexico!! Sorry about the bug. Get well soon.

Esi - Thanks, much better now!

Indie.Tea - The world needs more filled churros.

Ivy - That's what I get for going off the nistissima :-)

I'm again looking at your food and photos while hungry. Bad idea. I've never lost weight in Mexico, and I've never been sick. Don't like filled churros. I stick with the classics ;)

Besitos, Anna!

Did you try the fresh garbanzo beans? Are they steamed like edamame? I see them for sale from time to time, but haven't ever bought any to mess around with.

Kat - You don't like filled churros?! WHAT?! You crazy, but I still beso you.

Mary - I did try them! And YES so similar to edamame. They got my fingers all infused with chili and saliva. It was great.

You ate all this food and lost 10 pounds (even though you caught a bug), is this considered #winning?
