The Best Brownie I've Ever Had: Papa Haydn, Portland

When my sister-in-law, Crystal, announced a "Girls Weekend in Portland" with full intent of getting inked in celebration of her recent PhD-hood I had a good feeling there would be more than estrogen backed smack talk about my older brother involved. There would clearly be desserts involved, among other forms of hedonistic consumption. Rightfully so since I have never seen my brother eat more than a spoonful of something chocolately or cakey: he eats cereal for dessert. And the last time I visited them in Moscow there was nary a speck of refined sugar floating around the kitchen's confines. So it was suiting that Crystal , her BBF Nicole (flying in from Reno), and I decided to eat dessert before dinner. And not just any ol dessert - no - Stumptown's finest dessert destination: Papa Haydn.

We happily struggled with the mouth foam inducing choices displayed in the desert case. Overwhelmed with choices, I decided they all looked good but Crystal and Nicole demanded selections involving chocolate; one being the Chocolate Cherry Brownie. Dense, dark and almost batter-like with just the thinest crust on top, this could very be not only the best brownie I've ever had, but maybe even the best chocolate desert. The cherries provided a contrast while also adding to the depth of the confection. Amazing!

Life Changing
We also got the dessert sampler, chosen on the premise that the majority of the samplings were chocolate based. 

The Raspberry Gateau, a fallen chocolate soufflé, brushed with red currant glaze then bordered with bittersweet chocolate ganache and topped with a raspberry was pure intenseness. One bite alone was enough to quench any chocolate pangs.

I was most excited to try the Oregon Blackberry Cheesecake, a season version of their New York style cheesecake, made with cream cheese and sour cream. I love blackberries and loved the marriage of the tangy cheeses and dark fruit in this dessert bite.

The Chocolate Cube, a bittersweet Tanzanie chocolate box bursting with dark chocolate mousse, was similar to the aforementioned Gateau in richness and maxed out chocolate richness.

The Boccone Dolce was more up my ally. I loved the airy swiss meringue, fresh chantilly cream and berry combination drizzled with dark chocolate sauce. It's simple, but heavenly.

The final sampler selection was the Hazelnut Goo-Goo Cluster (without marshmallows) topped with edible gold flakes. I am a sucker for nuts and chocolate so this was fantastic, but I was still too distracted by the chocolate cherry brownie.

I got a coffee to wash down my desserts. Strong and bitter.

Crystal went for a frothy latte.

It all looks so good! I can't decide which one I prefer best. The cube thing looks quite different and sounds very tempting with it's mousse filling. I too, go nuts for chocolate and nuts and the Chantilly cream dessert sounds so luxurious I want to bathe in it LOL!
