(Delicious) Attack of the Killer Ostrich Egg!

I finally made it back to Solvang's Ostrich Land when the eggs were in season and selling for $25 a pop. I'd previously inquired on a visit in November when only 1 egg gets laid a month, with a $40 price tag and freshness levels in question. So being late June, the timing was right to buy my first ever ostrich egg. I selected what I thought to be a nice looking egg and the clerk wrapped it up in styrofoam wrap, telling me about his 1 O egg a week diet. I wasn't about to bring up his cholesterol. By the way, no ostriches are killed at Ostrich Land - just the eggs are harvested.

Ever wondered what's in an ostrich egg? About 12 chicken eggs packed into one massive attack. Here you go...

 It was necessary to try the ostrich egg in pure form, so the first course consisted of scrambled ostrich eggs with Greek olive oil, salt and pepper. It was very close to chicken egg, but a little sweeter and perhaps richer in flavor. I roasted some baby carrots on the side.

Two more frittatas were made with the rest of the egg:

#1: Roasted vegetables, fresh herbs and cheese topped with chive flowers (chive flowers a direct result of my neglect to trim). I didn't follow a recipe - just made it up as I went along.

Baked at 350 F until golden brown. I liked this one the best. The roasted vegetables added to the sweetness of the egg, cut by parmesan and monterey jack cheese.

Frittata #2 was made with roasted and fresh mushroom and roasted garlic and parmesan.

 The roasted and fresh mushrooms added an earthy flavor to the egg, but the roasted garlic was ultimately the shinning star.

What wine to pair with this ostrich egg extravaganza? I wondered the same thing myself. A friend referred me an awesome website called WinedIn. It said to drink something bubbly with frittatas so a prosecco was enjoyed to wash down the eggs. Ostrich egg mission accomplished and do-over status approved!

Crazy! I think the ostrich egg episode of Food Party is the only other time I've seen someone do this. Have you seen it? Hilarious.

That's amazing! I bet you could have handled the Emu egg on Top Chef without batting an eyelash!

Have you had ostrich meat before? I've heard it's actually very good too.

Anna you made amazing dishes here and I loved the picture of you riding the ostrich at the end of this post, but the work is not done. The project must continue with an activity for the ostrich egg shell.

Maybe you could decorate it for Easter or make it into an olive oil container. I read about the bushmen in South Africa who engraved designs on theses. Maybe you could record recipes on yours.

Think about it. You can trust the shell will be safe with me until you return with your plan.

This is totally insane! I mean that in the most delightful way! Holy cow, what a humongous egg! I had no idea ostrich eggs are harvested for eating. This post reminded me of Fred Flinstone eating a giant Pterodactyl egg for breakfast LOL! Love the sound of your frittata's...and the final photo of you is hilarious!
