I was Jewish in my past life for sure. I love bagels and schmears and matzo ball soup. I had one Santa Cruz Skate Boardish Jewish friend in elementary school and after school I'd go to her house and her mom would feed us fruity seltzer water and poppy seed rolls with loads of cream cheese.
And after that I didn't really know any Jewish / Kosher peeps. I just kept eating bagels. The West Coast kind, i.e. Noah's Bagels and the occasional mediocre mom and pop bagel shop.
While I was in NYC I tweeted my pal Sam Kim (because he is our very own Angelino NY expert) for good bagel recommendations and he quickly responded with Ess-A-Bagel, which conveniently happened to be a rock's throw from my host's pad. Coincidentally, it was the first eating establish in New York that I visited without a line. And also the best bagel and cream cheese I've ever had.
A cinnamon raisin cream cheese bagel bromance
I ordered a large coffee and whole wheat everything bagel with scallion cream cheese for a grand total of $5. I sat comfortably with a view of the bagelry bromance featured above.
All on an old skool cafeteria style tray
My bagel was...
Everything I could ever hope for in a bagel and cream cheese: a chewy ultra fresh bagel with a seed crusted outside and a thick layer of whipped cream cheese with a mild scallion touch. And to mazel-tov it all off, it was all kosher, so the rabbi loves me.
Damn I wish I lived closer
