Crazy Delicious & The Coolest Onion Soup Ever: Minx, Glendale

I only go to Glendale to visit my Greek-Argentinian Aunt and Uncle. I stay at their place and eat empanadas and sandwich de migas washed down with low acid OJ and perhaps an instant coffee if I'm lucky that day. So when I got the opportunity to dine at Minx I was happy to finally escape from my domestication and go out in Glendale. And of all places, Minx - located on a hill with a view of the city. Minx has brought in a new team of talent, including chef Keven Alan Lee, who has recreated the menu with inventive and soulful touches.

We started off with a a basket of warm herbed bread accompanied by cinnamon spiced honey butter. The butter had a warm, sweet spice at first taste followed by an element of heat.

The Hearts of Romaine Salad with five garlic parmesan brushed hearts of romaine, grilled hearts of palm, kalamata olives and ciabatta tostinis was a glorious combo of crunch and tang. The Blooming Butter Head Salad with organically grown butterhead greens, lola rosa, crispy bacon, stella blue cheese, shaved red onions, charred corn, candied cashews and a blue cheese vinaigrette was a delightful sweet and savory combination.

The much anticipated Creamy Five-Onion Soup arrived next. Served in a large onion is a soup of caramelized shallots, red and yellow onions, leeks, and scallions creamed together with melting gruyere cheese. The soup is not your typical french onion soup, instead, it's a thick, velvety soup that tugs at the strings of your heart and makes you feel all warm and cozy inside.

The Orleans Style BBQ Shrimp was a tribute to Chef Lee's appreciation for Creole cuisine. The black pepper shrimp were perfectly cooked to heighten the sweetness of the shrimp with the deep, sweet spices of the BBQ sauce. The garlic bread, extra garlicky and buttery, made the perfect tool in sopping up extra juices.

For my main entree I partook in the Seared Diver Scallops, seared medium and served with the chef's home made tropical habanera BBQ sauce. Again, the scallops were perfectly cooked, giving way to the sweetness and creaminess of the flesh.

Some of my dining friends enjoyed the 14 Day Dry Age NY Steak served with merlot demi-glace and roasted shallot zinfandel compound butter. I saw a lot of happy, smiling faces.

To go with our main entrees, we shared a variety of Minx's well executed sides:

Au gratin potatoes with horseradish cheddar cheese: my favorite and I'm not even a 'tater fan.

Shoestring buttermilk onion fries, sweet potato fries with maple syrup, and truffle parmesan french fries: quite possibly one of the best sweet potato fries I've had in awhile

Steamed broccolini with garlic butter

Yukon Gold mashed potatoes with bacon, scallions and creme fraiche

Jumbo grilled asparagus

Brussel sprouts and bacon with balsamic butter

Sauteed garlic spinach topped with romano cheese

MINX's desserts all have a creative twist and are a force be reckoned with:
 Chocolate toffee bread pudding with Kahlua milk chocolate fondue: A melding of everything sweet and sinful

Lemon Panna Cotta: with goat cheese cookie crumb in a chilled berry broth was light, not too sweet, and refreshing.

Blackberry Pear Cobbler: with Tahitian vanilla bean ice cream and lavender whipped cream was my favorite. It was a delicious concoction of buttery crust, warm sweet fruit with melty ice cream with an herbal note from the whipped cream.

Banana Foster Whoopie Pie: with handmade marshmallow, fresh bananas and carmel orange tuile was a beautiful take on a childhood classic. I am not a fan of banana flavored things so I didn't partake in this, but everyone else really liked it.
